The Big Horn Mountains and Bighorn National Forest

The Cloud Peak Scenic Skyway, U.S. Highway 16 from Buffalo, Wyoming (above), is the fastest, safest and most scenic route to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park over the Big Horn Mountains.  Along this route you will see the tallest snow-capped peaks of the magnificent Big Horn Mountains.  Wildlife, including deer and moose, are often seen along this route.

There are many things to see and do during any season in the Big Horn Mountains and Bighorn National Forest.

Springtime in the Big Horns provides brilliant wildflowers which are highly visible in the many parks throughout the Bighorn National Forest and along the roadsides.

Outdoor recreational opportunities are endless in the Big Horns.  Horseback riding, camping, hiking and backpacking, climbing, trout fishing, hunting, photography, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and just plain sightseeing are all popular activities.

There are numerous Forest Service campgrounds along U.S. Highway 16 or you can camp on your own just about anywhere in the Bighorn National Forest.

The over 200 lakes in the Big Horns and the many streams provide exceptional trout fishing and magnificent views.  Lakes are accessible via the many marked hiking trails within the Bighorn National Forest either on foot or on horseback.

Several mountain lodges along U.S. Highway 16 provide fine dining, cabin lodging, horseback riding, pack trips, guide services, gift shops and other quality services.

If you wish to explore on horseback, holding corrals and ramps are available in areas such as the Circle Park and Hunter Corrals trailheads in the Bighorn National Forest. Several area outfitters provide horses for hourly, day or overnight trips.

   Bull Elk

Fall brings big game hunting opportunities for pronghorn antelope, mule deer, whitetail deer, moose and elk as well as upland game bird and small game hunting.

Most hunting seasons begin in early or mid October.  Hunting license applications are available through Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

Winter sports enthusiasts will not be disappointed when they choose the Buffalo area as their destination site for winter recreation. Imagine snowmobiling up miles of picturesque mountain trails with endless acres of powder. Willow Park, Pole Creek and many other areas offer great opportunities for the cross-country skier. Big Horn Mountain Ski Resort is top notch for down hill skiing and snowboarding. Snowmobile and ski rentals are available.

Snowshoeing is also a popular sport in the area and snowshoeing equipment can be purchased or rented right in Buffalo's local sporting goods stores.

Ice fishing is popular in the lakes and reservoirs in the Big Horns and around Buffalo.
