Fort Mckinney was established in 1878 at the foot of the Big Horn mountains and on the famous Bozeman Trail to provide support and supplies for army campaigns. The nearby settlement of Buffalo was founded the same year. Historic personalities such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Tom Horn, Teddy Roosevelt and Calamity Jane paid visits to Buffalo for a soft bed or a strong drink. Historic buildings dating back to 1804 are now homes to unique shops & restaurants in downtown Buffalo.
Nearby you can visit the Fort Reno Site, stop at Crazy Woman Crossing where Indians ambushed and killed soldiers from Fort Reno. Once back in Buffalo, stop by Mountain Plains Heritage Park, a unique crossroads of the history of the American West.
There are many historic places in the Buffalo area such as the Fort Phil Kearny Site & Visitor Center where you can visit the grounds of the Fort and learn about the Fetterman Battle and the Wagon Box Fight. Visit the Fetterman Battlefield and take an interpretive self guided tour. The site of the Wagon Box Fight affords a scenic view of the Big Horn Mountains along with details about the fight.
The Historic TA Ranch is located south of Buffalo and is where the Johnson County Cattle War came to a dramatic end. You will still find the original bullet holes in the historic old barn.
At the Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum you can learn about Buffalo‚ as western heritage; the Johnson County Cattle War, the Fetterman and Wagon Box Fights, the Bozeman Trail and Bomber Mountain.
