Spring and Summer in Buffalo, Wyoming and the Big Horn Mountains

There is much to do and much to see in the spring and summer months in Buffalo, Wyoming and the region.  The beautiful Big Horn Mountains and Bighorn National Forest are just minutes away from Buffalo.  The scenery is always spectacular, abundant wildlife are bearing their young and many events are scheduled for the enjoyment of the entire family.

Spring in the Big Horn Mountains - In late spring the mountain meadows are ablaze with color. Numerous species of wildflowers can be found. Lupine, Yellow Bell, Goldenrod, Aster, and Blue Flax are just a few that can be seen.  Scenic viewing and photographic opportunities are at its best during this spring season.

Wildlife can often be seen with their new young at this time of year.  Pronghorn antelope are always visible along roadways in the prairie areas and the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains.  Moose are often visible from US Highway 16 over the Big Horns.  Moose are often unpredictable, especially in the case of a cow moose with a calf (left photo).  Use care when viewing or photographing moose.  Elk can sometimes be seen, but they usually reside at higher elevations during the spring and summer months.  Mule Deer and Whitetail Deer are also very plentiful in the region.

Taking a drive north of Buffalo along French Creek Road and the Bud Love Winter Game Range, deer and antelope can always be seen - sometimes numbering in the hundreds.

Jim Gatchell Museum...Welcome to the Legacy! - The Jim Gatchell Museum, dedicated to local collector Jim Gatchell, opens each year in early April.  The Jim Gatchell Museum of the West is contained on four levels within two buildings. The Museum is dedicated to preserving the integrity of the American West.  The Gatchell has recently received the designation as a Nationally Accredited Museum.  Open April through December.

Historic Tours - (spring and summer) Forts, battlefields, Indian art rock caves, outlaws and renegades. Through self- guided area tours you can experience the integrity of the American west. The Jim Gatchell Museum in Buffalo, the Hoofprints of the Past Museum in Kaycee and Fort Phil Kearny (north of Buffalo) are a journey in time.  See our Western History page for more information.

At the west edge of the city park the path joins the green belt and becomes a gravel surface. Benches are provided for the weary traveler to rest or just enjoy the panorama. Five exercise stations are provided along the way. Trail maps are available at the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce.

Buffalo Golf Course - Spring means it's time for Golf again!  The Buffalo Golf Club, a 4-star golf course, has earned its place as one of the bright spots on the US Golfer's Great Courses map -- it's known as one of the most beautiful and best courses in the state. The clubhouse provides golfers with a great place to talk about the game and go over that last shot while enjoying great food. Cart and club rentals are available at the pro-shop.
